HOW TO USE A MEASURING TAPE

Starting at zero, extend the tape flat along the distance you’re measuring, letting the measuring tape drape like the fabric would once the garment is fitted on you (considering the stretch). Use the number that lines up with the endpoint.

When measuring a circumference (i.e., your waist), the endpoint is where the tape measure comes back to meet at zero (or start of the tape). Put the zero end on top, lining it up with the markings to get your number.

TECHNIQUES FOR INSEAMS

-

Like a tailor

Hold the start of the measuring tape at the center of your crotch. Have your helper run the tape loosely down the inside of your leg to the length you want.

use what you got

Lay a pair of close- fitting pants down flat. Run the tape from the crotch along the inseam to the hem of the leg.

last resort

Run the tape down from your crotch to your knee, pressing it loosely to your thigh. Switch hands as you hold the tape at the knee. Bend over to run the tape down your leg to the length you want.

GET THE LOOK YOU WANT: TIPS & TRICKS

HOLDING THE TAPE

Let the measuring tape relax and lay (just rest) on or next to you, keeping it right on or around the length you’re measuring.

  • Avoid added inches by keeping the tape from sliding down or all around.

  • Don’t squeeze so tight that you can’t breathe, and be careful if you’ve got flesh popping out on all sides.

  • For a fit that doesn’t hug your body, put a finger or two inside the measuring tape.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wear close-fitting pants or leggings and the shoes you plan to wear.

Use the length from your crotch to the floor (with no shoes) for a polished full-length look.

cHOOSING YOUR INSEAM LENGTH

You can always add or subtract inches to get the desired inseam you want. Put on the pants and shoes you’ll wear.

It’s easiest to have a friend to help so you can look in the mirror while you adjust.

For the most flattering looks, pay attention to where the pants will hit between your knee and the floor, and what tops and shoes you’ll wear.

Last words

Consider the garment you’re measuring for. Look at your body’s proportions, the shape of your waist, hips and legs.

Think of the comfort, functionality, and style you want and need from the fit of the pants.
